On the 8th of November 2012, Plan Ambassadors Mr Ekin Cheng and Miss Louisa So, joined hands with Mr Paul Chow, GBS, JP, Board Chairman of Plan International Hong Kong, Miss Vivian Lee, Marketing Director of Ocean Park, Mr James Murray, CEO of Plan International Hong Kong, and Whiskers, the mascot of Ocean Park, to kick off the “Walk for Children” 2013 fundraising walkathon at Ocean Park at a Press Conference. Following the success of the inaugural Plan International “Walk for Children” in 2012 organised by Plan International Hong Kong, the organisation is pleased to present the next “Walk for Children” on the 17th of March 2013. Funds raised by “Walk for Children 2013” will support Plan’s education programme in JinPing County, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. This project will increase accessibility to and the quality of early childhood education services for pre-school children, and will include school block construction, equipment upgrades and teacher training.

The Press Conference was commenced with a speech by Mr Paul Chow, followed by a speech by Miss Vivian Lee. Then, Plan Ambassadors Mr Ekin Cheng and Miss Louisa So appeared on stage wearing kids’ school uniform to support the “Best Dressed Award” competition to be held on the eventday.

A new route has been chosen for “Walk for Children” 2013 – participants will start at the new entry plaza of Ocean Park – Ocean Square, and walk through various new attractions launched recently such as the Grand Aquarium, Aqua City Lagoon, Sichuan Treasures, Old Hong Kong, Polar Adventure, Thrill Mountain and The Rainforest… with Whiskers Theatre being the destination. To encourage team participation, teams composed of 30 or more members will be awarded and there is a Highest Participation Team Award for the team composed of the most members. Participants are also welcome to design their outfits on “kids” or “ocean” or related themes to compete for the Best Dressed Awards.

Mr Paul Chow, GBS, JP, Board Chairman of Plan International Hong Kong, said, “Thanks to the continuous support of Ocean Park, Plan International Hong Kong is delighted to hold the second ‘Walk for Children’ in 2013. Education is an indispensable element in children's growth and proceeds raised by the walkathon will support Plan’s education programme in JinPing County, Yunnan Province, Southwest China, to set the feet of ethnic minority children on the path to a better future. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thankfulness to Plan Ambassadors Mr Ekin Cheng and Miss Louisa So. Their benevolence has raised public awareness on children in poverty and they are blessed to be able to benefit from their support. Please join us at ‘Walk for Children 2013’on the 17th of March!”

Miss Vivian Lee, Marketing Director of Ocean Park, said, “As Hong Kong’s People’s Park, Ocean Park has provided joyous moments and pleasant memories to numerous families. We are pleased to support Plan International Hong Kong to co-organise the ‘Walk for Children’ so that donors and supporters can enjoy an exceptional experience in the Park and at the same time help the underprivileged children in China.”

Plan Ambassador Louisa So said, “The funds raised will support Plan’s education programme in the JinPing County and that’s why I am dressed as a student to match the theme of the ‘Best Dressed Award’ – ‘kids’, and at the same time, to represent the children we are helping here. I have a pencil in my hand, which is very approachable for the children in Hong Kong, but it is a luxury for the children in the JinPing County. Please join ‘Walk for Children’ to improve their learning environment which will benefit at least 300 pre-school students each year. We need you to help us light up the lives of these needy children!”

Dressed as a student holding a book in this hand, Plan Ambassador Ekin Cheng said, “Children in Hong Kong may take owning their own textbooks for granted but it’s not so for the children in Yunnan Province. We can help these needy children and our funds will go to build 3 pre-school buildings and provision of classrooms facilities, including books, furniture and teaching equipment. Please feel free to join the walkathon in outfits on ‘kids’ or ‘ocean’  related themes to compete for the Best Dressed Awards. I was so impressed by the creative and spectacular costumes last year and hope to see more at the coming walkathon!”

“Walk for Children” 2013 is now open for enrolment and the deadline is 20th February 2013. Participants may stay in Ocean Park for the rest of the day, enabling them to enjoy the park’s attractions with family and friends.
